Learn Photography in Northern Virginia

_DSC5161Yes, most cell phones come equipped with cameras, but real cameras and good photography skills can turn that picture from a snapshot to an image that makes people sit up and take notice.

Northern Virginia’s scenic beauty and close proximity to Washington, D.C., provides a wealth of photo opportunities.  From wineries and mountains to historic towns full of stories to share, there is always something to capture and share with others.

Ask yourself: Do you have a passion for pictures and photography? Are you looking for a new way to express what you see? Is your camera too often on auto mode?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, Washington Photo Focus can help you enjoy your passion while you hone your photography skills.

There are lots of reasons to improve your photography skills ‑‑ meeting people with similar interests, taking better pictures of family events or vacations, capturing a scenic view, or holding on to an event that has significance for you.  Photography is also a great professional skill to add to your resume.

In the Digital Camera Basics class, you will learn:

  1. The important functions for your camera and how to set them.
  2. Setting the ISO, shutter speed and aperture to ensure a good exposure.
  3. Composition – how to make powerful pictures.
  4. Accessories such as filters and tripods that can help you make more impactful pictures.
  5. Editing software – which programs are best for organizing and editing your files.

Washington Photo Focus offers a range of photography courses starting with intro classes for beginners and for those who want to learn to use their camera correctly. For more experienced photographers who want to learn or improve their editing skills, we offer classes in Lightroom and Photoshop.

The classes are taught by Eliot Cohen, perhaps our area’s most experienced photography educator and someone whose photographs are held in equally high regard.  Eliot keeps his classes small so every student gets all the time he or she needs for questions and response to their photographs. You will finish the class feeling more confident about your photography and with many new possibilities ahead of you.
